One of the most exhaustive collections of historical home information can be found here in Ralph T. Whitelaw's book, Virginia's Eastern Shore: A History of Northampton and Accomack Counties. Commonly known as Whitelaws, the books, written in 1951 detail the transfers of land and homes going back to the early land grants. From the Preface, "The result of the research is a story of the land and its owners, rather than the usual chronological history of its economic and social development, but the latter is inevitably brought out in any account of the people whose lives influenced this development." These volumes bring together two of my favorites - history and real estate! I recommend taking some time to look at these books, you'll be surprised.
